KATHMANDU BREW –

The first product to emerge from the Temple, we are proud to present our “Kathmandu Brew”. A Nepalese CTC tea that is a cousin of Darjeeling tea in its appearance, aroma and fruity taste. As with many products released from the Temple, this one has a story behind it. Whilst the brothers Oliver were on their travels in the Far East during 2010, they partook in a trek in the hills of Dhulikhel. Located at the Eastern rim of Kathmandu Valley, south of the Himalayas at 1550m above sea level and is situated 30 km southeast of Kathmandu and 74 km southwest of Kodari. During this trek they gratefully received this Nepalese Black Tea every night gazing up at the stars overhead.

Dabbling alongside a native, particularly strong concoction, know only as ‘Mustang Coffee’, a sort of hot whisky with burnt rice and a mysterious home brewed alcohol known as Lakshi.

We are delighted to be able to directly import this fine tea, full of delectable muscatel flavor with rich aroma and a bright infusion. The unique climate consists of crystal cool, crisp breezes from the higher grounds of Mount Everest and Mount Makalu, glorious sunshine, breathtaking mist and vigorous monsoon rains.

Truly a special tea blend drank perfectly with a slice of lemon or some fresh mint. Limited in stock, proudly brought to you by Temple.

CTC tea in Nepal is characterized by:

Crush tear curl (CTC) tea is a method of processing tea, where three main steps are involved - crush, tear and curl, hence the name CTC tea. CTC tea is produced in lower altitudes in the fertile plains of Nepal, which are warm and humid, primarily in the Jhapa district, which is ideal for the production and processing of CTC tea. The CTC tea produced in Nepal is known to be of great quality. It accounts for almost 95% of the domestic consumption, owing to its cost of production, which is much less comparatively to that of the orthodox tea.

The Nepal CTC tea is also characterized by four pronounced flushes, the First, Second, Monsoon and Autumn flushes, but unlike the orthodox tea, the CTC tea is more or less uniform throughout, often exhibiting a strong color and subtle aroma after infusion. However, the flushes do not begin and end in accordance with that of the orthodox tea, mainly because of the difference in the geographical and topographical conditions.
